In the summer of 1987, John Knoll (a visual effects engineer at Industrial Light & Magic, the company responsible for the visual effects of Lucasfilm productions) and his then-girlfriend Jennifer vacationed on the islands of Bora Bora. John decided to photograph Jennifer on the beach as she gazed out towards the island of To’opua. He titled the photograph Jennifer in Paradise. It went down in history as the first photograph ever to be digitally edited using Photoshop. The woman in the image is now known as Jennifer Knoll. She is a mother of two and has become synonymous with digital image manipulation.
At the time when John and Jennifer were taking their first steps as a couple, John’s brother, Thomas Knoll, was pursuing his PhD at the University of Michigan, researching Digital Image Processing. In 1987, he bought an Apple Macintosh Plus to help with his work. To his great disappointment, however, the Mac could not display grayscale tones in photographs. In an attempt to overcome this limitation, he wrote a piece of code that simulated a grayscale tonal range. He gradually expanded it with additional image-processing capabilities and named it Display. The idea for Photoshop had just been born. The program caught the attention of his brother John, who suggested that they commercialize it and turn it into a fully fledged image-editing application.
Thomas changed the program’s name several times, trying out ImagePro, PhotoHut and various other options. Each time, however, he discovered that the name was already taken. Eventually, he settled on Photoshop and registered the name. Around the same time, John travelled to Silicon Valley and demonstrated the program to Apple engineers and Russell Preston Brown, then Adobe’s art director and later a leading Photoshop evangelist. They were impressed by the software’s capabilities, and Adobe decided to license it in September 1988. Photoshop 1.0 was released in 1990, exclusively for Macintosh computers.
When Photoshop entered the market, the need arose for a sample digital photograph that could be distributed free of charge to users, allowing them to experiment with the new application’s capabilities. At the time, digital photographs were extremely scarce. Digitization was expensive by the technological and photographic standards of the day, and very few people had the expertise to carry it out. The two brothers decided to digitize Jennifer in Paradise because they considered it visually appealing and easy to manipulate using Photoshop’s basic tools. To scan it, they needed a Macintosh computer from the famous Pixar Image Computer and a specially trained programmer.
And so began the “revolution” in digital image manipulation. As The Guardian presciently wrote: “In a sense, Jennifer was […] the last inhabitant of a world where cameras never lied.”
