Το Σπήλαιο του ΚύκλωπαThe Cave of the Cyclops

Everything begins in the darkroom, at the moment a photograph starts to appear on the paper. The one who sees it, the narrator, is spellbound and wants to follow the path of photography.
His friend, the one who knows, nicknamed “the Cyclops,” shuts himself away at the end of each day in the darkroom, his own cave, to see what he has managed to gather from the light. There, across 30 episodes, he explains, wonders aloud and asks questions. The narrator listens in awe, thinks, asks and answers, often getting it wrong. Written in the first person, the book lets us read his thoughts and realizations as he gradually makes his way into the depths of the photographic act.
The book blends autobiography and fiction. The Cyclops was a real person, the friend who truly showed the author how to photograph, and who is no longer with us; the book is dedicated to him. His words, however, are written by the author as he understands them today, forty-five years later. Alongside the text, the book contains the author’s first photographs, from the time he was just beginning.
As in Plato’s dialogues, knowledge is not handed over ready-made; it is born through dialogue. Even the practical matters of photography appear poetically: the sensitivity of film becomes the sensitivity of the gaze to light. The shooting, the choosing, the editing, even the retouching: all of it is a deep inner process through which a person recognizes the world and discovers themselves.
A philosophical and poetic essay, a hymn to photography and to its capacity to become a vehicle for self-discovery.
It is addressed to anyone who loves photography, whether or not they take photographs, and wants to see it from within.
